Clay Shirky on news: don’t build a paywall around a public good

1) Go to the  Nieman Lab webpage (part of Harvard university) and watch the video of Clay Shirky presenting to Harvard students .  2) Play the clip AND read along with the transcript below to ensure you are following the argument. You need to watch from the beginning to 29.35 (the end of Shirky's presentation). 3) Why does Clay Shirky argue that 'accountability journalism' is so important and what example does he give of this?   Shirky quotes "Losing the News"   Now this doesn’t mean that all newspapers go away. It does mean that a lot of them go away. Syndication makes no sense in a world of URLs,  as the AP is realizing , so they’re saying you can send the traffic to us, instead of us sending the stories to you. 4) What does Shirky say about the relationship between newspapers and advertisers? Which websites does he mention as having replaced major revenue-generators for newspapers (e.g. jobs, personal ads etc.)?    He mentions websites like Monster, Match an

NDM: the effect of online technology on newspapers

1 ) Do you agree with James Murdoch that the BBC should not be allowed to provide free news online? In my opinion i think that it should be free online because as the audience we can gain access to the news with our smartphones for example which means that if BBC was not free consumers are going to be able to access new through other websites.   2) Read  this blog on the Times paywall three years on  (note this is the UK Times - not the New York Times!) 3) Was Rupert Murdoch right to put his news content (The Times, The Sunday Times) behind a paywall?  within the article it sates " As I wrote on The science of subscriptions "  in December, you only reach profit through subscriptions when you've deducted the cost of acquiring and retaining users. Three years on, The Times should be starting to see the benefits of their toil now." 4) Choose two comments from below the Times paywall article - one that argues in favour of the paywall and one that argues against. NDM HW :Huawei’s Mate smartphones

Image
h uawei’s Mate smartphones have made a bit of a name for themselves as powerhouse devices that come with long battery life and a big screen. With a 50-hour battery life and premium design, the Mate 10 Pro is no exception. Huawei  has tried to tread the fine line between being good value for money and offering a top-notch experience, but the Mate 10 is the Chinese firm’s first real winner. The front of the device is practically all screen with thin bezels at the sides and slim top and bottom sections, rivalling the Samsungs of this world but without the curved screen. From this article i was able to understand the how the phone industry  has changed and is changing much more quicker; because of this it is going to effect the new and digital media greatly, which is because we are now more connected to the internet than ever before.  On the other hand because of this device it is much more easier for citizen journalism because with this phone the consumer of media will be able to
